We held our annual Burns Dinner on 31st January at Chester Racecourse, and what a night it was. We started with Bishop Tanner giving the Selkirk Grace and this was followed by an excellent 4-course dinner, interrupted by the usual plethora of Toasts brought some frivolity to the proceedings.
Thereafter, we had fewer speeches this year and much more music from the redoubtable Tarland fiddler Dr Paul Anderson MBE whose fiddling was excellent as usual and Bruce and Sandra Davies who sang a range of Burns songs.
The highlight of any Burns night is of course the “Immortal Memory” and this was delivered by Mr Magnus Miller, an Edinburgh solicitor, who has been attending Chester Burns night for over twenty years. His Immortal Memory was superb, poignant and thought-provoking.
We were then treated to a superb rendition of Burns' epic poem 'Tam O' Shanter' by Mr Donald Rowantree. It was puir dead brilliant.
The Toastmaster, Professor Rob Marrs gave “The Land O' Cakes and the Chester Caledonian Association” in his usual inimitable style and was well received. The finale, of course was the “President’s Reply” which was witty and a bit sad as he admitted to supporting Dundee FC!!!!!
